Welcome to Storyteller Heart.

Don't click away thinking you've hit the wrong blog. This was Chasing Dragonflies and I still LOVE dragonflies. But I needed a change. I've been hitting a wall. I don't like writing the cookie-cutter blog posts about writing advice. There are plenty of blogs- AMAZING BLOGS- out there for that.

Sure, those posts are helpful and I love reading what other people have learned on their own writing journey. But... it isn't me. It isn't my passion to talk about writing. My passion is storytelling.

My passion is sharing the gift of words through the art of the story.

I don't love writing advice posts. I don't love talking about stories. I love actually writing the story.

So I decided that there was something I needed to do. And that meant making a huge change.

I'm not going to change my URL right now because that could mean all the people who follow my blog are automatically deleted and then y'all will never find me. Besides that, I do want to have my own website at some point, when the bank account is crying.

But, the heart behind this blog has always been the story.

I got to thinking a lot about what my purpose in life is. And you see, while I am doing a LOT of promotion for my books, I've realized something... something huge.

I don't want to be famous.

I want my words to take center stage.

I want the story to take center stage.

Lately, I've been uninspired. Which is why I'm writing this blog post and working on graphics the very day before it's meant to go up.

My post for today had originally been about something else.

But the reason why I've decided to make this change is because you're coming for words. You're coming here for the story. You're going to buy my book or not buy my book based on the story, the characters, the plot, and the writing style. 

I want to share with you my writing style. I want to feel freedom in creative expression. I want this place to be my release, my safety.

Not every Wednesday will be a short story or a blurb from a book. It won't always be snippets. Sometimes I may talk about a W.I.P. Sometimes, you may get a short story or flash fiction piece.

You may get aesthetics and words and ideas.

Sometimes, I may just rant about people and life.

I need this blog to be my r e l e a s e.

And for a while, it hasn't been. I was all too eager to take a break from blogging in November, not just because of NaNoWriMo, but because I was so bored of this. And when November was drawing to a close, I wasn't really excited to get back into blogging.

But now I am.

I have ideas and goals for this coming year. And I can't wait.

To recap:

Writing advice posts are gone unless I learn something super life-changing and want to share it. This blog is all about the thing I love: the story. The heart. The hope.

I may talk about life.

Above all, it's about the heart of the story.

I hope this is okay with you, and if it's not, I understand if you want to unfollow since this isn't the blog you followed to begin with. It won't hurt me. I am doing something that I need to do, so I respect whatever you need to do.

Writing a book is a huge undertaking. Be it fiction or nonfiction, you are pouring your heart and soul into something magical.

The beauty of words on a page, words coming from the very depths of your soul is something unmatchable and priceless.

And as you type "The End" or "To Be Continued," you have just finished writing one novel.

Maybe you just finished NaNoWriMo about two weeks ago. You're still riding on that high, but as we move on into December, you may be thinking, "Okay, now what?"

That's where this post is here to help you out. Here are five things you can do when you finish writing a novel.

1. Celebrate...

Duh. You've done something AMAZING. Whether you wrote this novel in one month or one year, you've accomplished something so freaking wonderful. You started and finished a novel. Do you know how many people give up in the middle of writing a novel?

Celebrate! Go get some cake, ice cream, pie, WHATEVER THE HECK YOU WANT. Go buy that jacket you've been eyeing in the store or those pair of yoga pants you really want. (just me?) Reward yourself for finishing this big thing!

2. Set your novel aside...

You're excited and ready to get your novel in shape. Maybe you want to self-publish (a totally great option) or maybe you want to go traditional. You want your book out there. You worked hard on it and you want other people to see it.

Which is why I'm telling you to set it aside. You may be thinking, "Brooke, what the heck? I have to edit my novel now so I can get it ready for the next step."

Yes, every first draft novel needs to be self-edited first. Saves you money in the long run if you edit your own manuscript before passing it off to an editor later down the line. But here's the problem with editing your book right away... it can mess up your progress. Setting it aside will save you time. A lot of authors set their books aside for about four to six months. When I first heard this, I wanted to scream. How would this save me time? It only delays my progress.

Six years of writing my first book and here we are. You know why? I tried to edit the book right as I finished. And deleted basically entire manuscripts every time. You have to have fresh eyes that have not looked at the book for a long time in order to edit rationally. Otherwise, everything will look like trash and you'll have wasted time writing.

Don't be like me. Set it aside and you'll actually finish faster.

3. Focus on a new project...

You probably have some other book ideas swirling around in your head right now. They've probably come up when you were writing, so you wrote them down and set them aside to focus on your novel. Well, you're novel is done for now, and you have time to write something new. So go for it! Write a new novel while you let the other one rest.

Begin your outlining process or whatever your process is, be it outline or just sitting down and typing away at your computer, getting words down.

It's okay to begin a completely separate novel, actually, it's beneficial in getting your mind off the one you just finished. Write a new novel because, when all is said and done, you'll have a few manuscripts lined up so you're always generating new content for readers.

4. Pursue your other hobbies...

Do you like to paint? Read? Blog? Whatever you're other hobbies may be, chances are you've neglected it while writing your novel. Pursue one or more of your other hobbies while you let your book rest. Maybe you can't focus on a new writing project right now. This is the perfect distraction.

It's okay to not write all the time. I struggle with this, especially after writing for so many days in a row and creating a habit. (Totally fine to write non-novel things such as blog posts or even journal entries.) Nourish your other artistic and creative abilities.

5. Go on an adventure...

Go outside and do something new. Or just go for a walk. Ride your bike. Enjoy nature. You probably didn't go out much when writing because you were focused. So now's the chance to go do things you didn't do while writing. (Don't be a hermit like me, peeps.)

There's so much to be done when you finish a novel, but you have to let it rest. That is the biggest thing I can say about writing. And trust me, it's hard. I finished my second book EVER and all I want to do right now is edit like mad. But if I do that, I know I will trash the entire manuscript, wasting all the writing time I spent. And that's not okay.

So, I'm going to work on a novel that I've been really passionate about, one that I really haven't paid attention to. But I'm in no rush to work on it or write it. I have to outline first. Otherwise, things get messy.

Hello, everyone! I'm back!

In case you missed the last post, (which you can find here) I went on hiatus for my first time doing NaNoWriMo. I knew there would be absolutely no way I could write 50,000 words and blog posts and work a full-time job and work on some other things.

But now that NaNoWriMo has come to an end, I am back to writing blog posts.

Today, I'm going to show you some aesthetics and snippets from my NaNo project. Of course, the big issue with sharing too much is that my NaNo project is a sequel to my upcoming novel, Rise. But, I am going to give as much non-spoiler information that I can. Plus, all snippets will be out of context so that's fun for you and even more fun for me because I know the context. 😏😏

First things first, let me give you the stats.

I started the first full week of NaNoWriMo with a vacation from work, which gave me a huge boost on word count goals.

First half of NaNo- 34,107 words written
Second half of NaNo- 16,334

Snippets:

~ Once alone, I feel the urge to scream. I grab a pillow and throw it over my face before screaming. I can see why girls do it. Therapeutic.

~ My mom grabs me, turning me to face her. “Are you all right?”
I brush her hands off me, stepping back. “Of course, I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?”

~ I lean against the pillar at the entrance of the school. My mom is running late. Again. This has happened all week, and I’m not going to bother Spencer again. But as usual, his truck pulls up in front of me. “She’s working late again?”

~ “This is some deep crap you’ve been going through. You’re fifteen, right? Why would you worry about this kind of thing?”

~  “Linley, I told you all never to enter this room.”
Her eyes dance with a spark behind them, more than that, a flame. She’s proud of her feat, sneaking in here and startling me. 

~ I sit, hugging my knees to my chest on the small cot. It’s cold in here, or maybe it’s me. I don’t know. I let the tears fall, the ones I’ve held back for days. They come easy now.

Final Word Count: 50,441

Any Days missed?

Oh yes, plenty of days. Besides the fact on some days I just didn't feel it, I also got into a car accident, which prevented me from focusing on my writing. (I wasn't hurt, I just mentally could not do it.)

But on November 25th, I hit 50,441 words and also finished my novel.

Will this be the final word count?

No.

Often times when I go in to edit the book in about four to six months, I end up with a higher word count. I'm hoping to bring it up between 65k and 70k.

This is the second novel I've ever finished in my life, Rise being the first one. Speaking of Rise, I have some fantastic updates to share with you.

3. How We Rise is with an editor...

And we aren't just talking about any editor, either. We're talking about one of the best editors in the world.

Y'all know how I am obsessed with The Blood Race and 100 Days of Sunlight. Well, the lovely editor of those two books is working on my book. As. We. Speak. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! *flails*

(FYI, I am not bragging, I'm just so freaking pumped right now.)

All these things have me so pumped and ready to take on the world!

I can't wait to tell you more about How We Rise and give you all the details.

I will be starting a street team early next year, and the street team will be the first to know all the details as well as spread the word about my book around their social media when they have the chance. October is here, which means Preptober is in full swing! I'm so excited, as this is the first year I have EVER participated in NaNoWriMo.

Today, I thought I would talk about what I'm doing for NaNo (My W.I.P, my plan to reach 50,000 words, and more!)

I'm not going into too much detail about my novel, but for November, I will be on hiatus so I can focus on writing my novel. I wish I was the super blogger who could churn out posts every week and still get that 50,000 words, but sadly I am not.

I can't go into too much about my W.I.P because it is book two of my trilogy. Rise has been completed and I want to work on book two, Fall. (Rise and Fall are working titles and not the official titles. Official titles will be revealed closer to publication.)

So, to avoid spoilers, I can't say much about Fall. HOWEVER, I can say I'm breaking my own heart with this book, so there is that.

I know I haven't revealed much about Rise, either, but I will be introducing my characters in a post very, very soon.

What I can tell you is this trilogy is dystopian, but breaking the boundaries of traditional dystopian and bringing in contemporary, sci-fi vibes. Yes, there's romance, but it doesn't control the entire, freaking plot. There's hurt, and heartbreak, and death, and friendships, and family, and an evil president bent on ruling the world, one nation at a time. There's a conflicted heir to the country and a sassy henchman. (Don't tell him I called him a henchman, he'll be offended.)

I'm taking traditional dystopian and kicking it in the rear end because I've seen too many fail to be about the actual government problems built up in the world and become all about romance.

I'm trying to make it as realistic as possible. So I've based it in current times instead of a future date, like most dystopian. (ALSO SIDENOTE, Just because it's based in current times does not mean I'm basing it on current people in power, or anybody who's currently president or ruler of any one nation. This idea came to me when I was fifteen, and I'm 20 now, so it's a story I've created for five years. I've seen so many people leave reviews of dystopian novels, comparing it to current times and I just want people to enjoy the story for what it is: A STORY.) #rantover

Now that we have that out of the way, you may curious about what I've done for Preptober.

Well, I've also been working on finishing Rise, so Preptober has consisted of me really just outlining book two. I used to be hardcore write from the seat of my pants type, but I've converted over to outlining and planning because it's fun and it's organized. I'm an organized person in everything else in my life, so it makes sense. (Abbie's videos are amazing if you want to look into outlining.)

Outlining actually doesn't take me a whole month, so I've just been adding to the outline here and there while I write Rise and now my focus can solely be on the outline. Because it's a sequel, I already know my characters. I know where I need to continue from, and that's AMAZING.

If not, I do suggest creating an outline for your characters first, but I'll link some videos here to help you figure out a method for that.

So, how will I reach 50,000 words by the end of November when I'm working a full-time job and am away from the computer for most of the day? (Well for one, full-time at my job is 30 hours instead of 40, so that helps.)

I will be using the Pomodoro Technique. I will write for twenty-five minutes, take a five-minute break, and repeat. My daily goal is to get down 1,667 words, which shouldn't be too difficult. I'm going to attempt to write twice a day, so before I leave for work and after I come home. If I can do this every day, I'll hit 50,000, which should bring me to having most of my novel complete. (My novels are about 70,000+ words.)

I guess that's it for now. I was going to do a post for Halloween, but seeing as I need to focus on my outline, this is going to be my last post for this month. Starting today, I will be on hiatus from blogging. I'll be back in December to give y'all a recap of how it went, and if I won NaNo. Because this is the first time I've done this, I'm not too concerned about winning NaNo. I'm happy to participate.

Welcome, one and all to today's post!

Today, I have a book review for you. We love books around here, don't we?

I have a book that's not only amazingly deep but honestly took me on the ride of my life. I love this book so much and you will, too. Also, you may be thinking, "Wow, that cover is a little girly."

I don't think I have that many male followers, but for those of you here, welcome! This book was not at all girly. In fact, I think both genders will enjoy this book. It was so deep.

Enough ramblings, let's get to the review.

But first... book details!

I'm not going to tell you this post will be a quick read or a cure for all your problems. This post is going to be a story of how I went from depressed, anxious, and basically acting like a crazy person to being calm, rational, and stable.

Let me start at the beginning.

The first time I remember being depressed was fourteen. I can't say I really know why. My family life, not to brag, is great. My life is great. I am blessed.

But, I remember my emotions being like a rollercoaster, and sometimes I'd be fine. As I got older (16-17) things were a bit tough concerning my mental health. I was depressed, my anxiety was at an all-time high, panic attacks would rob me from sleep at 3 A.M... it wasn't good.

At 17, I told God to take this depression and anxiety away. I told Him He can have it, I don't want to be this way anymore. I feel like that is the moment I truly experienced a miracle from Jesus. He is the reason I am here today.

I wish I could say my story with my mental health ends there, but... it doesn't. In fact, in some ways, it gets worse.

I am now 20. And I am just now finally pulling my mental health together. My depression came back, haunting me. Anxiety found new ways to torment me. And my mood went from calm to raging in not even a second.

September 28th, 2019 was the low point of all of this. I was at my worst. I was raging, crying, yelling, then I'd be fine. Then it would start over, like a cycle that kept repeating itself, a broken record that could only repeat over, and over, and over.

In these times, I didn't treat my family with the kindness or patience they deserve. For that, I'm sorry.

It has never been my parents who didn't want to take me to a therapist. In fact, my mom's suggested it many times. I've turned it down every time. I'm one of those people who don't really trust doctors. Yes I know, you're going to say, "Brooke, doctors know what they're doing. How could you know more than a doctor?"

I'm not saying I do. I'm saying I know my body and I would rather try natural methods of healing rather than putting some chemical medicine in my body. This is why I'm coming here today, over a week later, to tell you what has worked for me to stabilize my mood and hormones.

So, after that Saturday, my mom began research on everything I have been experiencing. Besides mental health, I've been dealing with hormonal cystic acne.

Hormonal cystic acne is different in that cystic acne forms giant, painful pimples that usually don't have heads or they do, but they're deep and red and painful. Hormonal acne comes on your chin and cheeks. Mine was all the above.

Besides that obvious sigh, I was depressed, anxious, and as I said, raging and crying, then I'd be fine.

This is not okay.

My mom felt like there were things going on in my gut. Your gut controls a LOT of your body, including your hormones and the release of the happy hormone. As she did more research, we decided to clean up our diets and begin taking a probiotic.

In less than a week, my whole life has been transformed. I feel so content and joyful. I still have bad days, but they're normal bad days. They don't involve me raging. I was even getting to the point of nearly breaking down at work. Now I can brush things off and move on with my life.

Customers still get me mad sometimes, but in five minutes, I'm fine. Before, I would hold on to that anger the entire day and even into the entire week!

This is not normal. I was not okay.

But I'm getting better every day and it's amazing!

So I want to encourage you to get the help you need. I'm not saying stop taking medicines that help you. NOPE, don't do that okay? I'm saying if you feel something is wrong, never be afraid to research the crap out of it. And I'm not a doctor, so if you feel like you need to see a doctor, go for it. I'm not saying doctors are bad. I've had bad experiences, so that's just a personal thing for me.

In case anyone is curious about the probiotic I use right now, it's from a brand called Spring Valley.

I guess it's easy to see what music I listen to the most. I wanted to take a moment to talk about mental health. Take care of your mental health. This month was rough for me, but honestly, I'm feeling so much better. I'm taking care of my mental and physical health. For the first time in a really long time, I feel amazing, I feel joyful and happy. 

It's easy to fall in line with constantly working, using our phones, social media... but we need to know when to step back, when to prioritize our mental health and our minds. 

Trust me, a few days away from the screen, a few days to focus on your health is not selfish. It's worth it. I'm not talking about the self-love movement. I'm talking about self- care. There's a difference. You need to take care of yourself in order to care for others and you want to be in the best health possible, right?

I love the feel of a new book in my hands. The beautiful feeling of holding someone's heart poured out into pages, the tender way the words mesh on the page creating a beautiful story... books are a gift. Reading is a privilege.

I bought five books that have been on my list for quite a while and I'm excited to share with you what I have bought.

100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons|

I had the greatest honor of reading the book in advanced. I knew even before I read this book that I would love it, and to no surprise at all, I FREAKING LOVE THIS BOOK. I bought it so I could put it on my shelf and admire the beauty that is this book.

Resurgence by K.A. Emmons|

I also had the greatest honor of reading this book in advanced. Once again, FREAKING LOVED IT. I love the entire The Blood Race Trilogy, and they remain my favorite series at the moment. It's going to take A LOT for someone to knock them down as my favorites.

I mean... no one else has Fin. 😍😍 (Refer to THIS post if you have no clue as to what I'm talking about.)

Out of Time Trilogy by Nadine Brandes|

Okay, so the next three books are a trilogy, which is why I grouped them together instead of listing each one separately. But I will link my review of each of them when I finish them. I'm not very far into the first book, but I also never read anymore. 😭😭

I have been wanting this series for years now, and I finally bought it. I'm so happy to have them on my shelves. What I've read so far is FANTASTIC and I can't wait to see what happens next.

So yeah, finally knocking down some books on my TBR. Also, at some point, I will get a better camera and lighting, but I'm actually kind of impressed with what I worked with and the outcome. I know the pictures aren't the best, but they are decent and I'm happy with them.

Also, side note: It's official Autumn! Even if it's still extremely hot where I live. I'm about to bust out the pumpkin spice. Give me all the pumpkin pie!!!

Hello, my friends. Thanks for checking in once again. Today, I have a bit of a rant that's been on my heart, something that's been weighing me down for a little while.

This isn't going to be controversial (or maybe it will be, who knows?) This is just something I've wanted to say for a long time and finally decided it was time.

You Are Enough.

Okay, I am guilty of this, but saying negative things about ourselves is NOT okay. My friends and I often call ourselves potatoes, or we say our pictures are bad.

You know what?

We're all actually pretty amazing. We're hot. I'm not going to lie. 😂😂😂

And yet...

we do this thing where we're like, "I'm sorry, I'm such a potato."

"Ugh, my hair is horrible in this picture, I'm sorry."

"I look like a potato, but look at my new shirt/pants/whatever clothing item."

No.

We are beautiful people.

You are beautiful.

Suicide prevention week was last week, but people often feel insecure, ugly, and not worthy. This leads to depression and anxiety. I know. I was there. Sometimes, I still am there. Sometimes, I still go back to that scared little girl, not quite sure why she was alive. I go back to wondering what my purpose is on this earth and if I really matter.

I've come a long way from that and I owe it to myself to acknowledge the fact that, yes, I am actually stunning.

(So are my friends, by the way.)

We are a beautiful group of young women. And we are enough.

I'm not saying this to be vain. Beauty is so much more than just what the eye can behold. Beauty is deep within. And it starts in the mind and the heart.

I fail a lot, calling myself a potato, saying I'm ugly, saying I have too much acne (cystic acne is not easy to get rid of, ya feel me? I will talk about that later, though.)

Basically, all I'm trying to say is we, as humans, need to stop saying such negative things about ourselves. It's a bad habit and cycle and it's honestly so toxic to our souls. We tell ourselves that we're fat, or that we are ugly, and that's not okay.

Look, every person you see on the street has a story. And every person you see on the street is saying negative things about themselves.

We need to stop this cycle and be kind to ourselves. We were created for a purpose, and none of that purpose includes the negative things we say about ourselves.

So, look in the mirror. Don't look at your acne, your scars, how your stomach sticks out a bit, or how your arms are a bit bigger. Don't look at how skinny you are compared to everyone else, or how short or tall you are.

No, just look deeper. Into your own soul, into your own mind. Look at the things you love. Look at how they make you glow.

Hello, friends.

This week is Suicide Prevention Week. I thought, seeing as the week is slowly drawing to a close, I should remind everyone what this week is about. Mental illness is a big thing happening around the world right now, but it isn't just a modern-day problem. Depression, anxiety, and other issues have been going on for as long as the fall of man.

I, myself, have dealt with depression and anxiety. While I cannot say I ever dealt with or struggled with suicide, it is still an issue very near to my heart, something I am passionate about. I want everyone to know there is more to them than the pain and that there is so much more life has to offer. Life is frustrating, I know. But please, read this story and think about all that could lie ahead. Know that I care about you. I love you. You are a person capable of amazing things.
